The Noble Failure: the first sixteen pages

This story was born on January 2, 2021, during a 24-Hour Comic Book Challenge

Described by one of the originators as an exercise in masochism, it also gleams with high-minded purpose, and thus has been also called the Noble Failure - to fail to meet a nearly impossible goal is not truly to fail. it's to try, to strive, and to grow.  so i stole the phrase for the title of my book. Stealing is one way to achieve a goal, after all.

Hosted by Comicaze and Toonsup, we spent 24 hours together online - mostly on Discord - conceiving stories, sketching, drawing, coloring, sharing progress,  encouraging one another, eating, drinking, yawning, and faceplanting on our keyboards. No one managed to complete a full 24-page comic book.  One participant finished a completed colored 16-page comic*.  Most of us didn't finish anything.  I created 6 fully colored pages, and am now pursuing the "Eastman Variation"  - finishing what I began even though the 24 hours are past.  

*is it any coincidence that he ate nothing during the 24 hours, slept not at all, and survived on coffee, cigarettes, and whiskey?

Daphne's Grandpa

Do you ever decide to watch a movie based on the "More like this" suggestions in Netflix? Do you ever discover an exciting new author in the "more like this" section of your local library's electronic catalogue? Presumably those suggestions have something  in common with the initial selection you made and maybe even offer a commentary of sorts on the initial item.

The same arrangement happens in Cartoonstock.com.  Below each cartoon is a collection of other cartoons by the same artist, and below that is a collection of "More Similar Cartoons."  What does it say about my cartoon, that the "more similars"are 180 years old?  These are all by George Du Maurier, a cartoonist for Punch magazine.  It's rather an honor, and an amusing one at that.

(Bonus: George was the grandfather of Daphne Du Maurier, who wrote about birds attacking humans, and about animals running a hospital for humans. hm... i think i see a trend here)

Saratoga Noir Comic Strip

“Freedom of Expression” 2017!

 Gentoons is participating in the International  “Freedom of Expression” exhibition sponsored by The Norwegian Cartoonist Gallery and tOOns MaG /Arifur Rahman.

Exhibitions:

1. The Norwegian Cartoonist Gallery (Avistegnernes Hus), 22nd of April at 14:00 till 21st of May 2017.
Per Edgard Kokkvold, Writer, and Chairman of the Norwegian Broadcasting Council. Former newspaper editor, secretary general of the Norwegian Press Association and leader of the Press Complaints Commission will be inaugurating the exhibition at 14.00 PM on 22nd April.

2. The Norwegian Festival of Literature in Lillehammer at Elephant Kunsthall, 31st of May at 15:00 till 4th of June 2017.
Moddi Knutsen, Norwegian musician will be inaugurating the exhibition and Roar Hagen, Norwegian political cartoonist will be announcing the name of award winner cartoonists at 15:00 PM on 31st May.

3. Indian institute of cartoonists, Bangalore, India, 29th April to 20th May 2017. 
Dr. Sathyabhama Badhreenath, Director of National Gallery of Modern Art will be inaugurating the exhibition at 11.30 AM on 29th April.
