Comics and controversy

Did you ever think that that cartoon strip about the round-headed kid might be considered controversial? In an age when cartoons have sex, travel in time, take drugs, and deride our glorious administration, it's hard to imagine such a harmless little "appeals-to-everyone" comic strip could ever have caused dry heaves. And yet, look at this letter I came across:
